Mt. Blanc, FranceI went to Bretagne, France in September 2006 to do a 4 day challenge with Gilles Barbot and some good friends from Esprit de Corps in Montreal. After 4 days of biking, hiking the red granite coast, sailing to St. Malo & running to Mont St. Michel, I ventured down to Chamonix to climb Western Europe's highest peak. The mountain views are stunning.
Aconcagua, ArgentinaAconcagua is the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalayas. It stands at 22,856 feet (6,962m) and is situated in the Argentinian Andes near the border with Chile. It is one of the 7 summits (highest mountain on each continent) and as a result is sought after by many international climbers.
Mt. WashingtonThe group I train with in Montreal often go to the Presidential Range in winter to sharpen our skills. It gets some pretty nasty conditions.
Mt. Everest, Nepal 1969
In 1969, when I was in my early twenties travelling around the world, I found myself in Kathmandu, Nepal. Just after arriving in the city I met a New Zealand climber who had just returned from trekking to Basecamp Everest. Moments after listening to his story, I knew I had to do the same thing. After several days of preparation, I left Kathmandu on the 22nd December 1969 and spent 32 days alone trekking in the mountains and finally up the Khumbu glacier to Basecamp Everest (about 18,500'). It was one of the most remarkable and exciting experiences of my life.
Bolivia, Huanya PotosiI went to La Paz, Bolivia November 2002 to climb Huayna Potosi 19,970' (6,088m) in the Cordillera Real Andes. The altitude of La Paz is almost 12,000', so it is a good place to begin acclimatizing. I then spent a few days on lake Titicaca at 12,700' and next I trekked through the mountains for 4 days to the base of Huayna Potosi. I was ready to climb but a tooth abscess forced me back to La Paz for medical attention. To recover I bused to the south of the country to the highest and largest salt lake in the world called Salar de Uyuni. After about a week I returned to Huayna Potosi and climbed. Bryce Canyon, Utah
