Mt. Everest, Nepal 1969

In 1969, when I was in my early twenties travelling around the world, I found myself in Kathmandu, Nepal. Just after arriving in the city I met a New Zealand climber who had just returned from trekking to Basecamp Everest. Moments after listening to his story, I knew I had to do the same thing. After several days of preparation, I left Kathmandu on the 22nd December 1969 and spent 32 days alone trekking in the mountains and finally up the Khumbu glacier to Basecamp Everest (about 18,500'). It was one of the most remarkable and exciting experiences of my life.
